Sometimes I wonder why I'm blessed as I am...
I can't explain how hard this pay cut has hit me, both emotionally and physically. I cried 2 weekends in a row, sometimes until my eyes were swollen. I realize that we could get by on $200 less a month. We wouldn't go bankrupt, even though we sometimes are paycheck-to-paycheck. But we have always known how to cut back and not live outside our means. We've never truly gone into debt. We both agreed to work part-time while our kids are little so that we could be more available to them, but we wouldn't have done so had it put us into debt. Working these schedules has also allowed me to return to school. We don't have any debt on credit cards, and our only true debt is one of our cars and our mortgage. We get by just fine, and because of the way our babies are cared for by their grandparents and other people, they have never, ever gone without. In fact, I'd say they may be just a little spoiled. ;)
Anyway, long story short, I fretted so incredibly much about that pay cut. It was more about how hard I strive to be a GOOD employee and how hard I've worked for the last several years, despite a drowning career. I'd just about bet a million bucks that the career of a medical transcriptionist will be eliminated in the next 10 years. I've watched my earnings go from being very easily earned to being reeeeally difficult to keep up with what I once made. It has a lot to do with speech recognition software, offshore hiring, and the fact that the company I work for is monopolizing the MT scene. (We gobble up mom-and-pop companies left and right.)
It's been a scary ride, that's for sure. It was SO easy and SO fun at first, but it's been a juggle.
Despite it all, I've stuck with it. I've been working for this company for over 6 years, and due to the ability to work an oddball night schedule and also to work from home, I've felt blessed even when it became harder to make ends meet.
This pay cut made me feel like my efforts to "hang on tight" and be a star employee were fruitless.
I put on my big girl panties and sent an email to my new manager and explained to her that I truly felt worthy of the pay I was getting and that I'd been doing upper-level work in my work pools for over 4 years.
After many tears, prayers, hopes, and too many emails to her, she talked with our HR department and was not only able to save me from a pay cut... but she also got me a RAISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you totally just get chills? I did!
It's not a huge raise, but it is a raise. It felt like a million dollar raise to ME, if you want to know the truth!!!! I cannot be more beside myself tonight.
A prayer answered, a worry lifted, and a smile on my face!!!!!!!!
