Just for keeping up with the story, we've now started calling this wonderful little miracle a "she."
Well, the only thing different this morning was that the easily visible wings on the outside of the coccoon were now very dark. I was afraid that something had gone wrong, but held onto hope.
I had a doctor's appointment today, and Bryce and I ran errands afterwards.
About 2:30pm, I walked over to the vase and peeked inside. The coccoon was now very light on first glance. I then saw a flutter from the top of the other side of the vase. When I turned it around, I saw THIS peeking back at me!

I squealed. Bryce squealed. I panicked to find something bigger to put her in until we could go get Sophie from school. I wanted a true ceremony with both of my children having a hand in setting her free. With a large box and a window screen, I felt she'd be safe.
When we got home, we got the camcorder and camera and headed outside with the bigger box.
All four of us sat there looking at how beautiful she was and marveled at her markings.

Once we felt ready, I had both kids hold the screen together and gently lift it.

She sat there for a moment, but when I moved the camera in closer to take a picture, she gently fluttered out of the box.
She flew from one spot to another landing in the grass all throughout the backyard. We chased her from one spot to another, giggling and taking more pictures.

At one point, she crossed paths with another butterfly, and either it was another Common Buckeye Butterfly like her, or they just so happened to cross paths in this cool little fluttery dance.
Eventually, she fluttered over our fence. I said a prayer that she wouldn't end up a bird's brunch or on the windshield of someone's car... she's just too special. :)
I came back in and immediately took pictures of her coccoon. Just an amazing experience all around...

The back side of her coccoon...

And her "front door" ~ AWESOME!!!!
Happy Birthday, "Hope!"
