Date night with the Jeanses

So I turn 36 this Wednesday. My request? Taking my husband to have sushi with me. I really didn't think he'd be so open-minded, but the boy ate stuff that even *I* wouldn't eat!!! He tried calamari and another type of squid!!! ACK!!!! How about THAT?! He didn't like that he sampled as much meat as he did since he's not really been eating meat much anymore, but he wasn't a fan of raw veggies wrapped in rice and seaweed and then dipped in wasabi and soy. In fact, I think after trying a bit of a veggie roll he said something along the lines of, "There's something wrong with you. That tastes like chemicals." Of course, I was giggling so much watching his expressions change as the wasabi kicked in that I didn't care what his distaste for wasabi was at that moment. LOL!!!

I feel bad, though. They were rinsing the cold bar down and had the rolls moved to a different area (without labels). I asked the guy which rolls were vegetarian and then loaded them onto my plate. Unfortunately, it was after I'd eaten like FOUR rolls that I noticed that it was a California roll with crab. I didn't taste it due to the wasabi overload and the several other veggies, so it wasn't until I stopped talking to Chris and paid attention that I noticed it. :( I really didn't want to eat meat, so that sorta bummed me out. The other veggie roll I had was GREAT as well as one I'd never tried before that was a sweet tofu roll. Good stuff! Lots of soba noodles and tempura veggies and salad with ginger dressing... Mmmmmmm!!!!

It was dark in there, so the lighting is a bit off... and here I am (stupidly) excited about my non-veggie roll. I swear I could slap myself for that one!!! Hey, maybe it was IMITATION crab!

When we left, we walked around the mall and a few other shops trying to kill time before heading downtown.

On our way, we stopped off in Midtown to walk and peoplewatch. We stopped by House of Mews and said hi to the kitties in the windows...

Isn't he handsome?

They were all sleeping in little baskets in the windows. How sweet!

...and then we took some pictures along the way...

I found this little dirty doll on the curb next to my feet...

By then, it was getting darker, and on our way towards the river, we stopped at Sun Studios for a few more snapshots. It was just as the sun was setting, so it was pretty "dusky" out there...

Then we drove down to the Main Arts District and parked. We walked and walked and walked!

Beale was WAY too crowded, but it was still fun to walk around downtown.

We ended up going to The Peabody Hotel and took the time to look at their old photos and the memorabilia room. For as long as I've lived here and for as many times as I'd been in that hotel, I'd never taken a minute to look at this stuff. It was cool!

You can't see it, but I scribbled "Nic [heart]'s Chris" on the memo pad...

We also played in some of the corridors and took more pictures.

I told him I wanted a picture that showed our height differences. I'm about 5'3", and Chris is about 6'1".

Once we were done there, we started talking about dessert. Where? Our favorite nighttime dessert joint - GIBSON'S!

We then came home and kicked back and watched a few more episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and crashed.

What a fun night!!! It's nice to spend this downtime with my husband... sorta takes me back a few, yanno? On the drive home, we talked about how this year marks 15 years that we've been together. Kooky!!

  2. Sounds like a great time and I am FLOORED that Chris tried squid! *I think most sushi places use imitation crab in their rolls because it comes in nice little sticks which makes it easy to roll--but even imitation crab is still fish.
