Catching up ~ June

Okay, let's see... I haven't journaled for quite a while, so I have several past events that I need to touch base on. My journaling has fallen to the curbside, and it needs to stay as a constant thing in my life. It's important to me, and it's therapeutic... and it allows me to always remember. Let's go from little to big...

Bryce ~ First of all, my baby graduated preschool. He did SO good on stage singing with his friends! I always get choked up watching my babies on stage. He looked so little and so big all at once. I can't believe that I'm letting go of another part of my motherhood to them - the days of having them home with me most of the time are almost completely behind me. I feel like a door is closing, and it's really bittersweet. It seems like it was yesterday that Sophie was on the same stage. Just goes to show you how quickly 2 years can fly by.

After his graduation, Bryce had one more day of school to say goodbye to his friends. I took off of school to go with him. There was ice cream and a moonbounce and lots of fun! He made some really sweet little friends in preschool, and I know he'll miss them.

One of the funny things I kept as a constant when dropping him off in the mornings was to do a "funny dance" outside as he watched me walk to my car. Rain, snow, sun... parents watching, teachers watching, kids watching... Didn't matter. I pulled out the Macarena, the Funky Chicken, and others to make him smile. It all started when, during the first few days, he would cry when I left. This gave him something to look forward to when I left, and it also distracted him a bit. He would always watch with his little face in the window upstairs. I blew kisses and waved when driving out of the parking lot... I never stopped if the window was still in my view... just in case.

(the infamous window where he'd watch and the sidewalk below where I'd stand)

Sophie ~ My big girl had an awards ceremony at school. Her teacher gave awards and ribbons to children who qualified for different things. What I thought was so sweet was that she didn't leave ANY child out, and everyone got something. Of course, she recognized the Principal's List kids and the Honor Roll kids, as well. Sophie rocked ALL A's and was not only given ribbons for each subject she got an A in, but a REAL trophy (her first) with her NAME on it! She was so proud!!

They also had a fun end-of-school play date that I made sure to attend. It was a Field Day, and there was bubbles, lots of sidewalk chalk, moonbounces, huge slides, and even a waterslide!!! When the class was playing with the sidewalk chalk, I drew like 20 kids' names on the school's sidewalk "graffiti style" and they LOVED it!! "OOOhhhh, SOPHIE'S MOM, will you pleeeeease do my name, too?" I had a giggle over that. It was a LOT of fun. It was precious to watch Sophie and her girlfriends hang out and play all day, too. There are a few little girls that she really bonded with - her "BFF," though, is Laila. Their teacher called them "Twinkies," which is super funny beccause, well, they look NOTHING alike. :)

Both Kiddos ~ A while back, Sandra found out at work that the kids could submit drawings for the FedEx FamilyHouse (a home-away-from-home for children and families staying at LeBonheur Children's Hospital). They had a nice little event where they displayed the art and showed where some of them would be hanging in the building. Sophie and Bryce each had pictures hanging there!! I was SO proud!!!

Bryce's heart-shaped chocolate chunk. :)

I also recently promised Sophie a playdate with her friend, Laila, and took them two and the 5-year-old tag-along, Bryce, to the zoo. We all had such a good time. The weather was great, and the kids behaved so well. It was the first time I'd taken anyone out like that with us, and it was the first time I'd ever let Sophie ride like a big girl in the backseat without a booster. (Of course when we got back home, I put it right back in the car, haha!) Again, it was so cute watching her and Laila play together. They're just too sweet for words.

My furry baby, Ziggy ~ I just had to include this picture... 'cause, well, it's just to sexy to NOT include it. *wink*

Me ~ Okay, so I got finished with my last semester at school, got an A in A&P II and A&P II Lab. I'm now enrolled in Summer School and am taking Microbiology and Microbiology Lab. My professor is a HOOT, and as it turns out, I'm LOVING the subject matter AND the lab (but especially the lab). There are a few nursing students who are in the middle of the program taking the class, too, so it's really cool to talk to them about it all. In lab last week, we got to do simple stains. We used sterile toothpicks and smeared a bit onto a glass slide. We then heat-fixed it, stained it, rinsed it, and observed our slides at 1000x (oil emersion) under the microscope. It was soooo coooooool! I can now easily identify different shapes and arrangements of various bacteria. In our mouths, though, we mostly have coccus bacteria in different arrangements (staphylo- and strepto-) and a few bacillus. What I got tickled over was the really odd-looking "thing" on my slide. My botanist Micro teacher came to have a peek and said that I had stomata on my slide. What's that? The cells on the underneath of a green leaf that perform photosynthesis and the plant's "respiration." In other words, the bit of turnip greens I'd had for dinner were hiding beneath my molar crown where I'd gotten the bit of schmutz to put on the slide. :)

I can't believe how quickly nursing school is approaching. I have my doc's appointment (physical and titers) in a week, and in a little over a month, we'll have our orientation. I start mid-August. I'm sooooo EXCITED!!!!

In other news, I've taken on a new hobby! A girlfriend of mine introduced me to hooping, and I'm really loving it! It's a lot more upper body work than I'd EVER imagined, and I even have my own hoop. Black, white, and red - and I've named it "Jack." ;) Sophie and I joined her on a "hoop playdate" with some local hoopers here in the Memphis area this past weekend. It was fun standing around hooping with about 20 girls!

Chris ~ He has an appointment tomorrow with a cardiologist. Yes, a cardiologist. During his last 2 physicals with the PCP, Chris has had a slow heart rate. Well, that can be due to being really healthy and lean, or it could have something to do with his thyroid, or it could be due to the electrical system in his heart... His cholesterol, despite him eating really healthy and rarely any meat, is creeping up and is above 100. They did bloodwork for this thyroid levels, and we also found out that his TSH is much higher than it was last year. His father died at 49 of a heart attack, so he has a family history. Anyway, long story short, it could be anything, and getting a good, baseline one-over from the cardiologist is what needs to happen. I won't lie, it worries me. I just hope that it's more about him being healthy and less about anything else.
